A little over a year ago, I was in a training where the coach said, “You should do at least 2 to 3 things a day that are pleasurable for you.” Everyone agreed. And I realized I couldn’t remember the last time I had prioritized pleasure for myself. In fact, I had a hard time even listening to my basic needs on a daily basis. I was functioning at a self-care deficit. And I wasn’t quite sure how I had gotten there and operated that way for so long. It made me curious, what was it that I even found pleasurable? What could I implement regularly with all of the uncertainties I was navigating? And would even a small action make a difference?
I started with a bath. I set aside enough time to be able to relax (20-30 minutes). I turned down the lights, lit my sage, and filled my bath with a floral bath soak. I listened to my podcast and read a bit. And just taking that short amount of time for myself both relaxed and rejuvenated me. It became a ritual for me and one that at first I really had to reprogram myself to be unapologetic about. We hear it all the time, you have to take care of you first. And, often that’s easier said than done.
